Physicians Assistant
BJC Medical Group of Illinois
Class of 2012

Physicians Assistant (PA) Casey Newgent’s college education began at Lewis and Clark, but it certainly did not end there.

After earning her Associates of Science from L&C, Newgent went on to obtain a Bachelors of Science with Emphasis in Kinesiology from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and a Masters of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Midwestern University.

“Attending L&C allowed me to stay close to home, while continuing to play a sport that I loved, volleyball,” Newgent said. “The best part for me was the small class sizes which allowed more one on one interaction with my professors. All of the professors I had were very supportive of me as a student athlete.”

Newgent feels that beginning her studies at L&C gave her the foundation needed to be a successful student and professional.

“I was taught to always give my very best no matter what,” Newgent said. “I was working to achieve, and to not settle, for anything less than excellence. The best skill I learned that has helped me every day is accountability to my teammates, coaches and professors and to my studies. This has transpired into my career everyday.”

After being injured while playing volleyball in high school, Newgent decided she wanted to help athletes like herself.

“The injury opened my eyes to what an athletic trainer could do for a student athlete to keep them on the path of success,” Newgent said. “As I was completing my degree in Athletic Training at NIU, I was introduced to the PA profession. I then realized it was my new passion, one that would allow me to better serve not only the athletic population but an entire community of people.”

Now, Newgent is a PA with Dr. Aaron Omotola at BJC Medical Group of Illinois.

“I began working with Dr. Omotola right after I graduated PA school,” Newgent said. “He is an orthopedic surgeon, who specializes in sports medicine. Over the last four years, I have enjoyed working with him and learning from him everyday. We treat athletes of all levels, from Division I to your weekend warrior, as well as many others from the community with orthopedic needs.”

Newgent loves being able to help people as a member of a healthcare team and plans to continue to further her career.

“I plan to continue to develop my career as a PA,” Newgent said. “I love my clinical duties and don’t want to fall away from those at this time, but a future a goal of mine is to find leadership/administrative roles, both within the establishment I work, as well as professional organizations.”

Besides her education and determination, Newgent also credits her success to the support and encouragement of her family.

“I owe my success to my family, as well as my husband, who has been sticking by my side through the thick and the thin during the years as I put in all the time to get where I am today,” Newgent said. “My training and my job take up a lot of my time and energy. He has never complained about it and always is my biggest supporter when I need it the most.”
