Trailblazers, with 20 freshmen, open at SWIC

GODFREY — The turnover rate being what it is for in the world of junior college athletics, Lewis and Clark Community College baseball coach Randy Martz is familiar with the drill.

It’s a new world every spring - sometimes more so.

Martz, whose Trailblazers begin the season Thursday at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, faces the spring with a lineup of “about 80 percent freshmen.”

The Trailblazers’ 31-man roster includes 20 freshmen and nearly all the pitchers are first-year players. But that’s all part of the world of JUCO athletics, Martz said.

“That’s the way it is,” Martz said. “We have some really good freshmen. I’m looking forward to seeing them in games now.”
