GODFREY – After an uneventful day two of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament in Tyler, Texas, the Lewis and Clark Community College women’s tennis team fought to improve its national ranking, from 21st to 20th.

On Tuesday, May 10, the Trailblazers posted only one win out of 10 matches played when No. 1 doubles Mel Schlaeger and Nikki Steiner won the last match of the day 8-6 in the consolation round.

Wednesday, the team had a better showing with three wins and five losses – enough for the Trailblazers to improve their national ranking.

Three entries reached the semifinals of the consolation rounds, with two (No. 5 and No. 6 singles) losing. Only one entry, No. 2 doubles featuring freshmen Jane Grieser (Springfield, Illinois) and Maddie Swiecicki (Maryville, Illinois), is scheduled to play on Day 4.

“They are the last hope for additional points,” said Head Coach Jim Hunstein.

The team is only half a point behind Hinds Community College for 19th place.
