The women’s tennis team defeated visiting Fontbonne University (NCAA, DIII) with a decisive 9-0 victory on Wednesday, April 15. The win gave the team a final regular season overall record of 9-7.
“It was nice to wrap up the regular season with wins over four-year schools,” said head coach Jim Hunstein. “We played well at the Region Championship and then followed with strong play against McKendree and Fontbonne.”
Fontbonne only brought four players, so three matches (#3 doubles and #5 and #6 singles) were won by default. Even so, this was the Trailblazers’ fifth shutout of the season. Two other matches, both against Kaskaskia, were also aided by two or more defaults. The other two full 9-0 sweeps were against four-year schools; Stephens College and Blackburn College.
Conversely, the women have only been shut out once in a full match, a 0-9 loss to Quincy University. The other sweep was a 0-6 loss to Maryville University in a sleet-shortened match.
Although it was the last match of the season before Nationals, the match ended up being the first played under the lights at the Andy Simpson Tennis Center on the Lewis & Clark campus. The match started at 6:00 pm, so the last matches were played on the two lighted courts.
