Paralegal

Each division of law is an open opportunity for a paralegal career. For example, litigation, personal injury, corporate law, criminal law, employee benefits, intellectual property, labor law, bankruptcy, immigration, family law, and real estate.

Each setting is also an opportunity for employment, whether it is at a law firm, corporate legal department, real estate or title company, bank, trust agency, government agency, or judicial office.

Lawyers use paralegals (also called legal assistants) more and more. The legal definition: A paralegal is a person, qualified through education, training or work experience to perform substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily performed by a lawyer. Substantive shall mean work requiring recognition, evaluation, organization, analysis, and communication of relevant facts and legal concepts.

L&C’s program will prepare you with courses on the various types of law, the functioning parts of the legal system, legal research including computerized research on LexisNexis, writing and preparation of briefs, tort law, civil and criminal litigation processes, and the final paralegal cooperative combining classroom work with on-the-job experience in a legal office environment.

Paralegals do the legal work delegated by the supervising lawyer, so duties differ widely based on the type of organization in which you are employed. L&C offers you two levels of training.
