Lewis and Clark Community College’s school color may be a vibrant blue, but a concern for the environment has the College thinking green.
A leader in community college green efforts, the college created its Sustainability Department in 2008. Since then, Lewis and Clark has come a long way – through its work with the
National Great Rivers Research and Education Center and as a part of the
Illinois Green Economy Network – in infusing education with sustainability efforts and promoting green living and working practices throughout the community.
The threat is real.
In order to avert the worst impacts and reestablish more stable climate conditions on Earth, the global scientific consensus is that the human race needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 percent by mid-century. Lewis and Clark is striving to reduce its environmental impact so we may act as an example to inspire future generations of green citizens.
We’re doing our part, and you can too.
Lewis and Clark knows the importance of educating the community about sustainability solutions and practicing what we preach. We’re working with the campus community as well as public and private partners throughout the region to share best practices and reach throughout and beyond our seven county district.
Climate Action Plan
In 2008,
Lewis and Clark completed a Climate Action plan to use as a road
map toward being a carbon neutral campus in 50 years, or by 2058.
Efforts include implementation of campus energy
conservation measures, purchasing energy from renewable sources, as well
as on site energy generation, implementation of recycling practices,
general policy changes and commuting and campus fleet improvements.
