The project is intended for students who are academically or economically disadvantaged. This may include students who are:
- Disabled
- Displaced homemakers
- Single parents
- Students with limited English proficiency
- Nontraditional students (a gender-based designation based on specific career program enrollment)
Students who feel they may qualify for the Perkins Project may call the Project Manager or stop by the office. Qualification and eligibility can usually be determined within a few minutes.
Services
The services provided may include:
- Academic Assistance
- Math Lab (available to all students)
- Writing Desk Tutor (available to all students)
- Peer Tutoring (limited)
- Nursing Lab Assistance
Economic Assistance
- Textbook Loans
- Equipment Loans
- Provision of Required Supplies
The project does not provide direct funds to students. Nor does it provide reimbursements for tuition, fees, childcare, transportation, textbooks, equipment, supplies, or materials previously purchased by the student.
To be eligible for the Perkins Student Support Project's economic assistance services, a student must:
- Be a career program student intending to enter the workplace (or remain in his or her current job in that career field) immediately after completing that career program, and
- Receive one of the following types of need-based financial aid: Pell, MAP, IIA, SEOG, WIA, DORS/ORS, or Public Assistance (including a current medical card or LINK card).
Nontraditional Student Mentoring Services
(A nontraditional student is one enrolled in a career program in which 25% or less of that career field's population is of the same gender as the student. For example, a man in a nursing program or a woman in an automotive technology program. Nontraditional programs are designated as such by the federal government.)
