To teach in Illinois public schools, students must complete a baccalaureate program at a four-year college or university and then be licensed by the state of Illinois.

To transfer from Lewis and Clark into an approved baccalaureate program, students must meet the specific requirements of the program and complete a minimum of 60 semester credits. Students are strongly encouraged to complete either an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree prior to transfer. Since admission into Education Programs is competitive, completion of the recommended courses does not guarantee admission. Students must also pass the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) or earn a composite score of 22 on the ACT plus writing with a 16 in writing, and meet the minimum grade point average requirement for program admission.

Endorsements

If you already have or are working toward a Public Educator License (PEL) in Illinois, the opportunity exists to obtain endorsements in different content areas. Lewis and Clark’s Education Program has determined, which classes can be taken to meet the content requirement. Each endorsement require 15 credit hours of content, a 3 hour methods class (completed at an accredited four-year university), and a content test. For some of the content areas, there are expedited course options.
