GODFREY — Finally.
The Lewis and Clark men’s soccer team, after a month of play, has cracked into the top 20 of the NJCAA Division I National Soccer Poll. Trailblazers are ranked No. 20.
“It’s nice and the guys like the recognition,” L&C men’s soccer coach Ryan Hodge said. “And if you’re ranked now and move up in the polls, there’s a chance for a decent ranking if your team would be fortunate enough to get to the national tournament.
“But that’s a long, long way off.”
L&C’s women’s and men’s teams will play a home doubleheader against John Wood College of Quincy Wednesday. The women’s game is set for 2 p.m. and the men are set for 4 p.m. at Tim Rooney Stadium.
Monroe College of New York (6-0) holds down the No. 1 spot in this week’s poll, followed by Tyler, Texas second and Eastern Florida state No. 3. There were three newcomers to the poll. Essex County, New Jersey (5-0) debuted at No. 6 and Jefferson college of Hillsboro, Missouri (6-2-1) is No. 18. Lewis and Clark defeated Jefferson 5-3 on Aug. 28.
The Trailblazers (6-2) are riding a six-game winning streak. They went 2-0 last week, knocking off Heartland 4-1 on Saturday and winning 7-0 Wednesday at Lincoln Land in Springfield. A game scheduled Monday at home against Illinois central College was postponed because of wet field conditions. A makeup date has not been announced.
Meanwhile, the L&C women’s soccer team continued to hold onto the No. 11 spot in their poll. It’s the third consecutive week at that spot for the Trailblazers after being ranked No. 7 the first two polls.
