BLOOMINGTON — Randy Martz knows as well as anyone that games in March count as much as the ones in May. But the Lewis and Clark Community College baseball coach can’t help but wish his Trailblazers’ first 11 losses could somehow disappear from the record.
But even with LC’s rocky 1-11 start on the record, Martz is also quite aware that once the postseason rolls around in JUCO baseball, everybody’s back to 0-0.
“Since 1-11, we’re .500,” said Martz, whose team will begin the postseason at 1 p.m. Thursday against Lincoln Land in an opening-round game of the NJCAA Region 24 Division II Baseball Tournament in Bloomington. “Be nice to get those off the record, but we’re playing pretty well lately, so it doesn’t really matter anyway.”
Indeed. The Trailblazers log in at 16-27 and hopes to make some noise against the field that also includes John Wood Community College of Quincy, Parkland of Champaign, Spoon River College of Canton, Illinois Central College and Danville Area College.
The double-elimination affair will include four first-round games Thursday. winners will advance to the Friday quarterfinals, while losers will head to a consolation bracket that will require four more victories to make it to the semifinals.
