Trailblazers Place First in Annual Lewis and Clark Community College 2017 Fall Golf Invitational

Article by: Robert Kercher,

ALTON - With three members of the 2017 golf team putting up scores in the 70s, Lewis and Clark Community College edged out Mineral Area College and Blackburn College to capture the title at their home tournament.

Both Gavin Grote and Marc Berdala shot 77, while Alex Hillard and Will Spencer came in with 79 and 89 strokes respectively for a combined team score of 322. Mineral Area College posted a combined team score of 324 and Blackburn College finished with 328.

“The victory was unexpected, to be honest, as both Mineral Area and Blackburn bested us in our previous tournament, but our boys came to play and deserve the win,” Head Coach Gerald Mozur said.

Mozur described the tournament day as “near perfect” golf weather with little wind and a sunny day that wasn’t too hot.

“The challenge today for the entire field was navigating the greens,” Mozur said. “The pin positions were in some tricky places and putting was a challenge if you were not close to the hole on your approach.”

Berdala also placed second individually and Grote third, with both players finishing one shot behind first place medalist Branden Wagner of Mineral Area College.

“This is a competitive group of players,” Mozur said. “I expect they will build on this experience.”
