GODFREY –  Lewis and Clark Community College’s Trailblazers Golf team completed their regular season with two first-place finishes and are prepping for the regional tournament this weekend at D.A. Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois.

The Trailblazers posted a 301 winning score at the Illinois College McNaughton Memorial tournament on April 10 – besting Illinois College (302) and Blackburn College (304) in the 18-hole tourney.

Lewis and Clark was paced by Danny Selby’s 73. Selby placed third individually. Joaquin Perez and Jack McKinney each posted 75, and Eric Howes posted 78.

The Trailblazers then earned a second place finish the following week at the Illinois College Blue Boy Invitational. The team finished behind Kirkwood Community College, which took second nationally last year.

“We were only eight shots behind Kirkwood after the first day of the two-day event. The men posted a respectable 301 score,” Head Coach Gerald Mozur said. “The team struggled to maintain their form in very cold and blustery conditions. Despite that, their 626 finish was still a clear distance ahead of the third place team.”

The last tournament of the regular season was the Rend Lake Invitational, played at Franklin County Country Club April 23.

The Trailblazers posted a strong 305 score on the first day and shared the lead with host team Rend Lake. The second day, the Trailblazers took command with a 297 finish and a 602 score that was 13 shots better than runners-up Mineral Area and Rend Lake.

“Our team took first place and had three individuals in the top five including Brian Gebben in third with 75-72-147 total, Joaquin Perez in fourth with 72-76-148 total, and Jack McKinney in fifth with 77-74-151. It was a great win for the Trailblazers,” Mozur said.

With the regular season over, the Trailblazers hope to keep the wins coming. The NJCAA DII Region 24 Championship tournament at D.A. Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois this weekend is 54-holes and gives players the opportunity to qualify for the national tournament in Mesa, Arizona in late May.
