GODFREY — With Christmas break looming, Lewis and Clark and No. 14-ranked Olney Central College each had goals in mind Saturday at the River Bend Arena.
Suffice to say L&C attained most of its goals, while the Blue Knights will welcome the time off following the Trailblazers’ 72-60 District 16 upset. The result was L&C’s first victory over a nationally ranked team since moving up to NJCAA Division I status nine years ago.
“It’s a big win for us,” L&C coach Doug Stotler said. “It’s a win over a quality team, but most important, we’re among the top five teams in the district standings. If we can finish in the top five and get a bye in the tournament, we can win it.
“Of course, there’s a long, long way to go. But our guys are playing very well together right now, our defense is strong and we head in the Christmas break in good shape.”
L&C is 7-3 overall and 3-2 in District 16. OCC, which started the week ranked No. 14 in the nation with a 9-0 record, also lost Wednesday to Kaskaskia and heads to the break 9-2 overall and 3-3.
