Signing Recruits Is More Challenging in COVID-19 World

GODFREY — Just like all college coaches, L&C men’s basketball coach Doug Stotler is exploring uncharted territory because of the COVID-19 pandemic. And as Lewis and Clark Community College’s athletic director, he’s well aware of just how uncharted the recruiting jungle is these days.

“I have several verbal commitments from recruits,” Stotler said, “but since we can’t recruit in person because of the coronavirus that has closed campuses, getting actual signatures on letters-of-intent is a little more challenging than usually is.

“I guess we have to scan the letter of intent, email it or mail it to the recruit, have them sign and return to us, then we sign and ship it to the NJCAA.”

The pandemic-related campus closures and the cancellation of spring sports by the NJCAA has made life tougher for some than others.
