CENTRALIA — It was a title showdown split Monday for the Lewis and Clark Community College tennis teams in Region 24 action.
The L&C women blanked Kaskaskia 5-0 Monday to capture the team title, but the Kaskaskia men grabbed the team title with a 7-2 victory over the Trailblazers.
However, the top three certified teams, as well as the top singles players and the top doubles teams will advance to their respective NJCAA National Championships.
The women’s NJCAA Nationals Championships are set for May 5-10 in Tyler, Texas, while the men’s nationals are set for May 13-17 in Tucson, Arizona.
L&C’s Quincy Dillison and Tanner Hendrickson on the men’s side and L&C’s Mikaela Griechen and Miranda Griechen, on the women’s side, came away with the top spots in Region 24.
Miranda Griechen defeated Kaskaskia’s Kelsey Finley for the women’s No. 1 singles title. She then teamed up with Mikaela to defeat Finley and Ruth Moore for the singles championship 8-5.
Dollison and Hendrickson won the No. 1 singles and doubles matches to advance the the NJCAA Men’s Nationals Championships May 13-17 in Tucson, Arizona.
In other women’s singles results, Mikaela Griechen downed Lexi Wheeler at No. 2 singles. Ashton Tewell of L&C beat Moore to win No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, L&C Noni Updyke defeated Sydney Geurin 6-2, 6-1. Sara Kreutztrager beat Grace McCormick to win No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Kori Obert beat Elizabeth Brunner at No. 6 singles.
In doubles, Tewell and Updyke of L&C beat Wheeler and Geurin 8-2 at No. 2 and the team of Kreutzrager and Obert defeated McCormick and Brunner 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
In the men’s No. 1 singles match, Dollison defeated Blaze Taylor-Lutz of Kaskaskia 1-6, 6-4, 10-5.
In the men’s No. 1 doubles match, Dollison and Hendrickson teamed up to defeat Taylor-Lutz and Quinn Camfield 8-1.
In the other men’s singles matches, LC’s Hendrickson lost to Quinn Camfield 7-5, 6-3; Ryan Little lost to Alex Probst 6-1, 6-1; Trevor Meyer fell to Nicki Freeman 6-3, 6-2; Zach Vetter lost to Logan Lauder 6-1, 6-0 and Derek Hill fell to Andrew Roach 6-2, 6-4.
In men’s doubles, LC’s Little and Meyer lost to Probst and Lauder of Kaskaskia 8-5 at No. 2 and Vetter and Hill were beaten by Roach and Freeman 8-0.
