GODFREY — L&C softball coach Ronda Roberts admits the NJCAA awarding an extra year of eligibility to spring sport athletes in light of the virus pandemic is a good thing.
It’s just that her Trailblazers won’t benefit with a large number of players taking up the NJCAA on its offer.
Just one so far, in fact.
“We will have a good group returning anyway,” Roberts said. “All our freshmen are returning and we have some recruits already either lined up or who have given us verbal commitments.”
The Trailblazers had played just eight games when the pandemic hit. The NJCAA pulled the plug on the season in mid March.
“We didn’t get much of a chance at a season,” Roberts said, ‘but then, nobody else did either. We understand why it was necessary, but it’s a shame.”
L&C was off to a 6-2 start with doubleheader sweeps of St. Charles, Mineral Area and East Central to go along with a twinbill loss at Saint Louis CC.
