Trailblazers Volleyball Takes Second at Spring Tournament

Article by: Jim Hunstein,
GODFREY – The Lewis and Clark Trailblazers volleyball team finished second in a spring tournament this past weekend, with a final match record of 2-1.

The four-team tournament was held on Saturday, April 5 in Springfield, Ill.

“We played very well considering we only had a couple weeks of practice,” said Head Coach Jim Hunstein. “I don’t recall having a full squad at any one practice, but the women really came together on the court when it counted the most. We played a total of nine sets, and four were decided by either two or three points. We won all four of them.”

The Trailblazers started the day against tourney host Lincoln Land Community College, a Region 24 and Mid-West Athletic Conference rival, and dropped the first set, 17-25. Afterward, however, they rallied and won the next two by the same score, 25-23.

Lincoln Land Head Coach Jim Dietz said it was the first time a Lewis and Clark team defeated a Lincoln Land team in either the spring or fall in the eight years he’s coached there.

Lewis and Clark next faced Lincoln Christian University, the only four-year school in the tournament. The Trailblazers lost 3-0 by the scores of 15-25, 19-25 and 14-25.

The final match of the day pitted Lewis and Clark against Southwest Illinois College, another Region 24 opponent whom the Trailblazers defeated twice last fall in exciting five-set matches, and Lewis and Clark won in straight sets, 25-22, 25-14, 25-23.

“All in all, it was a very good day,” Hunstein said. “Everyone had fun and played well. Plus, it was a great way for four of our sophomores to end their careers as Trailblazers on a high note.”

Playing their final matches for Lewis and Clark were outside hitter Hannah Baker (Granite City), setter Ashleigh Holtgrave (Trenton), middle hitter Lizzie Meierotto (Brighton) and rightside hitter Alyssa Wagner (Edwardsville).
