GODFREY — A 5-0 start to the season has helped propel the Lewis and Clark Community College women’s soccer team to sixth in this week’s NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Poll, which was released Wednesday.
L&C was ranked 11th in the preseason poll. This week’s poll in the first of the regular season.
Meanwhile, the L&C men broke into their NJCAA Division I poll as a team receiving votes.
Eastern Florida State (3-0) is the top-ranked team in the Division I Women’s Poll. Tyler (Texas) is No. 2, followed by Phoenix (Arizona), Daytona State, Navarro (Arizona) and L&C rounding out the top six.
Both L&C teams will take on rival Southwestern Illinois College Thursday in Belleville in NJCAA Region 24 action. The women’s game is set for 2 p.m., with the men’s game to follow.
The L&C women’s team has outscored its opposition 42-1 in five games. The lone goal the Trailblazers allowed was in their most recent game, a 3-1 victory Sunday over Johnson County in Overland Park, Kansas. On Saturday, L&C’s women defeated the Rockhurst junior varsity 6-0 in Kansas City.
Earlier victories by the LC women were over Southeastern Iowa 10-0, Lindenwood-Belleville’s junior varsity 11-0 and Heartland College 12-0.
“We’re playing pretty well right now,” L&C women’s coach Tim Rooney said. “But I know SWIC will be the toughest test yet. They’ve got a real good team and they’re really well-coached.”
SWIC’s women’s team comes into Thursday’s game on the heels of a pair of losses on a swing through Florida last weekend. Sunday, SWIC lost to Polk State 2-0 after falling to No. 1-ranked Eastern Florida State 2-0 on Friday. Earlier, SWIC beat Jefferson College 7-0.
L&C is paced offensively by Senate Letsie, who’s scored seven goals and added three assists. Audrey Andrzejewski has six goals and two assists and Kassidy Louvall has six goals and no assists.
