GODFREY — In the nearly two and a half weeks since they last played a game, the L&C women’s soccer team did what it could to stay game ready. And when John Wood College came calling Tuesday for a quarterfinal game in the Region 24 Tournament, Trailblazers coach Tim Rooney was hoping his team wouldn’t be affected by the layoff.
Aside from a couple minutes to shake off the cobwebs, the Trailblazers (15-2) were clicking on all cylinders and downed JWC 8-0 at Tim Rooney Stadium.
“I thought for a long layoff like that, we locked pretty good,” Rooney said. “It took a couple minutes to get up to pace, but we moved the ball around really well.”
The victory for No. 8-ranked L&C means it will advance to the Region 24 semifinals at noon Saturday at L&C against Heartland, which defeated Kaskaskia 1-0 in a Tuesday quarterfinal. In the other semifinal on Saturday, No. 2 seed Southwestern Illinois College will face Illinois No. 3 Central College at 2 p.m. Tuesday, SWIC defeated Wabash Valley 6-0 and ICC beat Parkland 6-1.
The championship game is set for 2 p.m. Sunday. All games will be played at L&C.
