Defenses Helped L&C and SWIC Women to Region 24 Showdown

GODFREY — While scorers grab most of the spotlight, the Lewis and Clark and Southwestern Illinois College defenses are big reasons the rivals will square off Monday for the championship of the NJCAA Region 24 Tournament.

And what a showdown it could be.

No. 8 L&C will face No. 12 SWIC at 2 p.m. at Tim Rooney Stadium for the right to move on to the Central District Tournament later this week at STLCC-Meramec in Kirkwood.

“Anytime you play SWIC, you know you’re going to have to come ready to play,” L&C’s longtime coach, Tim Rooney, said. “We kind of thought we would probably meet for the final, but you never know until you play the games to get there.”

Saturday, both teams played their final tune-ups with pair of shutouts in the semifinals at the District 7 Sports Complex in Edwardsville. L&C downed Heartland College 6-0 and SWIC blanked Illinois Central College 3-0.
