Women’s Soccer Team Loses Central District Championship to St. Louis

Godfrey, Ill. - The Lewis and Clark Community College women's soccer team lost the district final 0-1 against St. Louis Community College today on the Meramec campus.

The Trailblazers completed their season 19-2 and earned the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Region 24 Championship title after defeating Parkland College 4-1 on Sunday, Nov. 3.

Head Coach Tim Rooney said today's loss is not how he and his women's team wanted to end their season, and he praised his team for their hard work and dedication.

"We lost. It happens. We just didn't want it to happen today because so much was on the line for our team," Rooney said.

A win today would have earned the Trailblazers a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. Lewis and Clark's women's soccer teams have earned two national titles with Coach Rooney- one in 1999 and 2008. In 2009, the women tied for third place at nationals.

Today's game was scoreless during the first half and most of the second. Then, with 8:59 left on the clock, Katie Rapisardo (10) scored the game-winning goal for the Archers.

Lewis and Clark had 14 shots on goal and St. Louis had nine. Both teams had four offensive corner kicks and 10 fouls.

Yesterday, Rooney's men's soccer team defeated No. 16 Jefferson College in their district finals and earned their first trip to their national tournament since 1989. They will travel to Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas to play in the NJCAA Men's Soccer Division I National Tournament Nov. 18-23.
