Trailblazers Women’s Tennis Advances at Nationals

Article by: Jim Hunstein,
GODFREY – Lewis and Clark Community College’s women’s tennis team concluded its first day at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championships in Tyler, Texas with all singles players and one doubles team advancing to the rounds of 16.

The Trailblazers actually had an inordinate number of byes, so most entries advanced without even taking the court, said Head Coach Jim Hunstein. Mostly what took the court was rain – resulting in a three-hour rain delay.

The Trailblazers only played three matches on the day. Before the rain came, Maddie Swiecicki (Maryville, Illinois) won her match at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Swiecicki and her partner at No. 2 doubles Jane Grieser (Springfield, Illinois) started their match under threatening skies and only got to 2-2 in the first set before play was suspended. After the match resumed, the team played well, but lost 6-4, 6-4.

The No. 6 doubles team of Miranda Jackson (Jerseyville) and Molly Stumpf (Highland) had the match of the day. They won the first set 6-3 despite losing the first three games. They then lost the second set 6-4, even though they again lost the first three games.  The third set went back and forth, ending in a tiebreaker. Jackson and Stumpf took an early lead but couldn’t convert several match points before losing the set and match 7-6 (6).

Weather permitting, the Trailblazers face a full day Monday with all singles and doubles scheduled to compete. Nearly everyone faces a seeded opponent, Hunstein said.
