Women’s Tennis Wins Home Opener Over Kaskaskia
The women’s tennis team won their home opener and first regional match of the season with a 9-0 sweep of Kaskaskia College on Tuesday at the Andy Simpson Tennis Center. The win, the Trailblazers second in a row, boosts their overall record to 2-0 on the young season.
“It’s always good to have a strong showing against teams in the region,” said Head Coach Jim Hunstein after the match. “And a 9-0 sweep is about as strong as it gets.”
The individual match scores are mostly one-sided, but the match at first doubles was anything but decisive. Trailblazers Mel Schlaeger and Clair Morrissey found themselves down 5-2 in the 8-game pro-set before they turned it around. They tied the at 5-all and finally broke a serve at 8-7 for the 9-7 match victory.
Next up for the Trailblazers is a long road swing against tough opponents. They play at Maryville University on Wednesday, at Principia College on Thursday, and at the Hack Kellner Tournament in Springfield, IL, on Friday and Saturday
