Women’s Tennis Wins Season Opener
The Lewis and Clark women’s tennis team went west and won over the weekend. The Trailblazers defeated Stephens College (NAIA) in Columbia, Missouri, for their first victory of the season. The final score was 6-3.
“I was very proud of our efforts today,” said Jim Hunstein, head coach, after the match. “We’d only had one practice outside and we were playing a new opponent, a four-year college, with a lot of freshmen in action, so you never know what might happen. But the women stayed focused and played well.”
In fact, all the freshmen on the courts (Merle Bitter, Germany; Alex Dennis, Godfrey; Mel Schlaeger, Germany; Nikki Steiner, Troy, IL) earned at least one win in their college tennis debuts.
Next up for the Trailblazers is their home opener against Regional opponent Kaskaskia College at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the Andy Simpson Tennis Center.
