The women’s tennis team defeated to visiting McKendree University (NCAA, DII) by the narrowest of margins in a hard-fought 5-4 decision on Tuesday, April 14. The win boosts the team’s season record to 8-7.
Three of the singles matches featured third set super-tiebreakers (first player to 10 points)and two matches had sets decided by a regular tiebreaker. Sophomore Claire Morrissey (Alton) won at #2 singles with a tiebreaker win in the first and third sets. Freshman Nikki Steiner (Troy) won at #4 singles with a 10-4 third set tiebreaker.
The match of the day came down to sophomore Abby Mundel at #5 singles. With the overall match ties at 4-4, Mundel split sets after dropping the first set and coming back to win the second, setting up the third set super-tiebreaker to decide the overall match. Mundel lost a few early points but came back to take the breaker 10-7, securing the win for her and the team.
“One sign of a mentally tough player is how well they play in a tie-breaker,” said head coach Jim Hunstein. “And to be able to succeed in close matches against a DII school says a lot about the make-up of our team.”
