Trailblazer Sweep Blackburn

Article by: Jim Hunstein,

The women’s tennis team swept Blackburn College (NCAA, DIII) on Monday, 9-0, at the Blackburn campus in Carlinville. The win boosts the team’s season record to 6-6.

The entire city of Carlinville was without electricity at the time of the match, but there was no shortage of power for Lewis and Clark Community College. This despite the absence of their number one player, Mel Schlaeger, whose parents were in town from Hanau, Germany.

“Everyone played very well today,” said head coach Jim Hunstein. “We missed Mel, as we always miss one our team when they’re not here, but even with the some changes in doubles pairings and line-up shifts, all the women did a great job.”

All three doubles teams won their matches handily by the identical score of 8-1. The coincidences continued as the partners at No. 2 doubles (sophomore Claire Morrissey of Alton and freshman Alex Dennis of Godfrey) and at No. 3 doubles (sophomore Abby Mundel of Wood River and freshman Merle Bitter of Hamburg, Germany) won their singles matches by the same scores as their partners.

Morrissey won at No. 1 singles and Dennis won at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 6-1. Then Mundel won at No. 5 singles and Bitter won at No. 6 singles 8-0. The latter two played eight-game pro-sets instead of a typical best of three set match due to lack of lighting. Bitter thought the pro-set should be called a monster-set, which the team readily adopted.

Even the partners at No. 1 doubles, sophomore Taylor Stevenson and freshman Nikki Steiner, both from Troy, won their singles matches by eerily similar scores.  Stevenson won at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Steiner won at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-1.

The Trailblazer’s match at Greenville scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled due to rain. Their next scheduled match is another tough four-year school, Webster University, on Thursday. The match starts at 6 p.m. and will be played at Memorial Park in Webster Groves, Missouri.
