Architecture is the creative blend of art and science used in the design of environments for people.

Problem-solving, decision-making, team leadership and imagination are key elements in the making of an architect and lead to the exhilaration that comes from seeing a design idea become a physical reality.

This program aims to meet a growing need in the field of environmentally sustainable building design and construction, as performed by AAS-educated and certificate-prepared technicians who serve architectural, design, construction and other building-related organizations.

The goal is to combine specialized skill courses in drafting, architecture and relevant software skills with general-education courses so students have a firm foundation in basic academic skills, as well as skills important to green building and design. The curriculum places emphasis on development of a common set of trade skills centered on sustainable design and construction, as well as the acquisition of critical thinking, communication and problem solving ability.

Architects may design, draw, build scale models, write, supervise or manage. They also may teach, perform research or consult. Most architects do not construct the buildings they design – that is usually done by construction firms. However, smaller projects, such as houses, are often built by the architect who designs them. Architects also may develop projects on their own, alone or in conjunction with financial advisors, real-estate developers or others. Architects do more than design space: they serve as consultants on a broad range of clients’ needs, including long-term business planning, relocation planning, human resources and space-use planning, facility maintenance programming and hundreds of other services.

Those planning careers in drafting should be able to do freehand sketching, precise scale drawings utilizing CAD software, and “visualize” complicated objects in either pictorial form or flat views. They should be able to function as part of a team since they will work directly with customers, engineers or project leaders.
