Back to School

Attending College as a Non-Traditional, Adult Student

It's never too late to learn something new or pursue the career of your dreams, so congratulations on taking this first step! Lewis and Clark is here to help ensure your transition back to school is as smooth and rewarding as possible.

We know that trying to work college into your adult life can seem overwhelming, especially if you're working full-time or raising a family. Let us help you find a path and schedule that works for you and not the other way around.

Credit for What You Know

Many adult learners have several years of working experience and prior learning – did you know you can get credit for that? Whether your knowledge comes from life, military training, formal or informal training, we can make it work for you.

We use a process called prior learning assessment (PLA) to evaluate your current knowledge and previous learning experience for academic credit. This can be accomplished through standardized tests, course challenge examinations and portfolio assessments. Some of these methods cost more than others, but any PLA credit-earning method will typically cost you less than tuition to enroll in the equivalent course. PLA credit can also be used to fulfill prerequisites for higher-level college courses at L&C.

Accelerated Programs

Your time is valuable, which is why we offer multiple pathways to a college degree that can get you to work faster.

  • AIM - This accelerated business degree pathway focuses on a flexible and advanced evening schedule to help you complete your associate degree in three years while attending part-time.
  • 30 and Out - These options allow students who already have an associate degree or higher to earn a new one in as little as one year.

School on Your Schedule

Lewis and Clark is re-envisioning higher education and working to make it accessible to anyone who wants to pursue it. Alongside our traditional in-person and online course options, we're offering more flexible pathways.

  • Blendflex/Hyflex - These new course modes let you attend classes in person or virtually, typically via Zoom, and switch week to week as needed, so it always works for you. While Blendflex focuses on synchronous learning (class meetings at the same time), hyflex courses add an online option that you can work through on your own time and at your own pace.
  • Competency-Based Education (CBE) - Currently offered within our Welding Technology program, CBE courses focus on skills learned rather than seat time. Each course has you master and demonstrate a set of competencies, which you can do on your own schedule and at your own pace, with instructor support.
