Reid Memorial Library offers access to more than 45,000 volumes, 40 full-text periodical databases, 12,500 full-text electronic periodical titles, videos, DVDs, compact discs and other materials to support classroom instruction, independent learning and research. In July 2003, the library joined I-SHARE, an academic library consortium providing access to over 30 million titles throughout the state of Illinois. Home and off-campus access to our full-text databases is also available for faculty, staff and students.
Other services include a computer lab, study and collaborative tables, interlibrary loans and a self-serve photocopier.
Library Hours
- Fall and Spring semester - The Reid Memorial Library is open Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Summer semester - The Reid Memorial Library is open Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon.
The library’s open computer lab close 15 minutes prior to the library closing.

Reid Memorial Library is located on the second floor of Reid Hall, Room 2216, which is between Caldwell Hall and Wade Hall.
Cell Phone Policy
Reid Memorial Library is committed to providing a welcoming environment conducive to quiet study. Your help is needed to maintain this.
Please observe the following:
- Cell phone ringers should be turned off while in the Library.
- Cell phone conversations should be kept short.
- Extended cell phone conversations should be taken outside of the Library.
- If you wish to report inappropriate cell phone use, please contact a library staff member.
Collection Development Policy
The primary objective of collection development is to support the educational curriculum of Lewis and Clark Community College. When selecting material for acquisition, the following criteria are considered. Faculty are encouraged to contact the Library Director at (618) 468-4310 for information about requesting material for purchase. As a general rule, the Library does not purchase textbooks.
Collection development criteria:
- How does the material support the educational curriculum?
- How does the existing library collection cover the subject matter of the requested material?
- Is the intended audience for the material consistent with academic library users?
- What is the price of the material?
- Does the material represent it's subject matter in an accurate fashion?
- Is the material available in a format that will withstand heavy use?
- How much demand is there for this material?
- The Library does subscribe to a rotating popular reading collection. To suggest a title, contact Assistant Director for Instructional Services at (618) 468-4320.
Community User Card
Residents living within the Lewis and Clark Community College District are eligible to apply for a Community User Card. Residents may apply for a Community User Card at the Circulation Desk and must bring proof of residency. Community User Patrons may have no more than five L&C books checked out at one time and may not check out AV or reserve items, request I-Share books or access L&C databases from off-campus.
Computer Lab
The Computer Lab provides access to PCs with a variety of in-house software programs (including Microsoft Office) and printers. Assistance is available during regular library hours.
Webcams and earbuds are now available!
Plug-n-play webcams are now available for in-library use to assist with access to videoconference class sessions (i.e. Zoom and Collaborate). A driver's license is required to borrow one. Free earbuds are also available. Both are available at the front desk.
Computer Use Policy
The following are considered tampering and nuisance acts and are subject to disciplinary action as stated in the STUDENT CONDUCT CODE listed in the Lewis and Clark Community College catalog.
- Installing and/or running unauthorized software.
- Changing the operating parameters of the operating system and/or application software.
- Copying or sharing student data files.
- Unauthorized copying of any software.
- Any other inappropriate behavior described in the L&C Student Conduct Code.
Students using computers in the Library will be required to sign in and out using their L&C-issued student login. Students should observe the posted lab times. This lab is available only when supervised by an assistant or office personnel.
It is a violation of the Student Conduct Code to access, view, download, transmit, or otherwise interact with any websites, chatrooms, bulletin boards, messages, or any other forms of communication that harass an individual or group because of their gender, race, age, religious beliefs, national origin, sex, color, ancestry, marital status, veteran's status, citizenship status, physical or cognitive attributes, sexual preferences or other protected groups as defined by law. This includes any forms of communication that contain obscene or inflammatory material.
To ensure that the use of electronic and telephonic communications systems and business equipment is consistent with the College's legitimate business and educational interests, authorized representatives of the College may monitor the use of such equipment from time to time to the extent permitted by applicable state and federal law. Users should not have any expectation of privacy with respect to any materials and information created or stored on these systems.
As a courtesy to other computer lab users and to control computer lab operation costs, students are requested to print no more than 25 pages per session. If a course assignment requires an excess of 25 pages, please see the lab assistant.
Copy Machines
There are two copy machines available for students to use in the Library. Copies are 10 cents per page.

The Reid Memorial Library complies with all state and federal copyright restrictions as they apply to photocopies, reserve materials, and digital copies of all Library materials and/or interlibrary loan materials.
eBooks
Access to more than 130,000 eBooks through Ebsco's eBook Collection. These eBooks are identical in content to their print counterparts, and cover areas including social sciences, humanities, science, technology and medicine, and the arts. Popular fiction titles are not highly represented in this collection. *Works for PC, laptop, netbook, Nook, Sony eReader, Kobo, tablets, Android and all devices supporting Adobe eBook DRM.
Interlibrary Loan
Currently enrolled students and employed faculty and staff of Lewis and Clark Community College may generate their own requests for books held by other I-Share libraries through the I-Share catalog. Those wishing to place a request will need to use the 14 digit number located on their campus ID.
Materials not owned by Reid Memorial Library or available through the I-Share catalog can be obtained from other libraries. Currently enrolled students and employed faculty and staff interested in placing a request should see a staff person at the Circulation Desk for more information.

Library Cards
Your Lewis and Clark Community College ID card also serves as your library card for Reid Memorial Library. All previous library cards are no longer valid. Library Cards are automatically activated on the first day of each semester and expire on the last day of each semester.
Library Donations

Library History
Reid Memorial Library, designed by architect Theodore Link, was originally built in 1889-90 with a generous donation of $25,000 from William Henry Reid as a chapel in memory of his wife, Eleanor Irwin Reid, a former student. The ceiling is constructed using wooden pegs without the use of nails and resembles the hull of a ship. The large Praise Angel window of Tiffany-style glass was created by Frederick Lincoln Stoddard and may be one of his last major works in stained glass.
The Praise Angel room attracts hundreds of visitors each year who marvel at the workmanship of the hull-shaped ceiling and the intricacy of the Praise Angel window. Under the guidance of Miss Haskell, Monticello Seminary reached new heights of academic excellence and her spirit became the very lifeblood of the institution. Her spirit was not deterred by the 1888 fire that destroyed the main building and she set about seeing to its reconstruction the next day. Ms. Haskell passed away May 6, 1907, and school folklore maintains that her spirit still resides in the main complex, especially the library.
Praise Angel Window
The Praise Angel represents St. Cecelia and is a focal point in Reid Memorial Library. The glass installation, according to Harriet Newell Haskell, “is a magnificent work of art, 6 feet 9 inches wide by 9 feet 8 inches high, and contains 3,175 pieces of art glass.” A date of 1890 and the initials “F.S.” appear in the right-hand corner and are those of artist Frederick Lincoln Stoddard.
Emigrating in 1867/68 at age 6 or 7 with his parents from Canada, Stoddard went on to attend the St. Louis School of Art and eventually formed the then well-known partnership of Stoddard & Davis Glass and Decoration. In 1891, a year after completing the Praise Angel window, Stoddard left St. Louis for Paris to study painting. Upon his return to the United States two years later, he became widely known for his murals which would be his main artistic focus for the duration of his career. Several examples may be seen in the Mayor’s private office in St. Louis.
In the summer of 2012, Jacksonville Art Glass removed the window containing more than 3,175 pieces of art glass for cleaning and restoration. Praise Angel was reassembled and rededicated in the fall of 2012.

Lost & Damaged Items
Patrons with materials that are lost or damaged beyond repair will be assessed the replacement cost for each lost or damaged item.
Past Due Accounts
Any unpaid fines/replacement costs will result in a restriction being placed on a user's account with the college. All official documents, including transcripts, as well as the ability to register for classes, will not be available until all accounts have been paid.
Patron Confidentiality
The Library Records confidentiality Act (75 ILCS 70/2) prohibits the release of any registration or circulation records of Library patrons except pursuant to a court order.
Renewing Material
There are three options for renewing items.
- Patrons may renew their own items by accessing their library account. Click the link "Find Books and Media," then select the Login link in the upper right corner of the page. Enter username and password information, then click "Checked Out Items."
- Items may be renewed at the Library Circulation Desk.
- Patrons may call the Library at (618) 468-4301.
Volunteers
Reid Memorial Library welcomes inquiries from individuals interested in volunteering their time in service of the Library. However, please note that the need for a volunteer will vary with current workloads and projects. There will be times when a volunteer is not needed.
Those interested in volunteering will be expected to have a fundamental understanding of the Dewey Decimal Classification System and a general understanding of how an academic library functions. Volunteers will be expected to work independently, with little supervision and training. Volunteers that are unable to perform duties or that are no longer needed will be asked to discontinue their service.
Wireless Internet Access
For patrons with portable computing devices, WiFi internet access is available throughout the library and most locations on campus. You may log in using your Blazernet ID and password.
