Water Classes for Kids and Adults

Lewis and Clark's swim program offers year-round swimming lessons and exercise for all ages in the heated Olympic-sized pool in the Hatheway Cultural Center.

Classes are taught by Red Cross-certified water safety instructors in the Red Cross-approved curriculum.

Kids Swim

Swimming lessons and water safety instruction are available for children ages 6 months and up.

Water Babies I and II (for children ages 6 months to 3 years)

This class promotes water adjustment, not necessarily swimming, for babies and toddlers. A parent or other responsible adult must be present and in the water at all times during the class.

Preschool Swim (for children 3 to 5 years)

Children learn water safety, personal safety, physical and mental adjustments to the water, buoyancy, body position and basic water skills such as front and back floating with a goal of coordinating a beginning crawl and elementary backstroke.

Swim Levels 1-5 (for children ages 6 and up)

Children will be skill tested on the first day of class to determine which level they are in. A wide variety of skills will be learned and new skills will be learned and old ones refined as they progress through the levels.

Swim Level 6 (for children ages 6 and up)

The objective of Level 6 is to refine strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Swimmers will also work on personal water safety, fundamentals of diving, fitness swimming and lifeguard readiness.

Competitive Diving (for ages 6 and up)

Swimmers will learn the skills and techniques necessary to dive competitively. Children must be currently enrolled in or have completed Swim Level 6, and must already know how to perform a basic spring dive with approach.

Competitive Strokes (for ages 6 and up)

Swimmers will learn stroke techniques for all four competitive strokes-freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Instruction will also include starts and turns. Children must be currently enrolled in or have completed Swim Level 6.

Competitive Swim Clinic (for ages 6 and up)

Offered every spring, this clinic will focus on stroke performance, breathing, starts and turns and will give serious swimmers a taste of competition. Learn terms and drills used to help performance, speed and endurance for swimmers. Children must be currently enrolled in or have completed Swim Level 6.
