College can be challenging, but you don't have to navigate it alone. TRIO Programs (TRIO) are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs that serve and assist low- to moderate-income families, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities in progressing through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. Lewis & Clark Community College offers two TRIO Programs: Talent Search and Upward Bound.
Talent Search
The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue to complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes financial aid availability and assists participants with the postsecondary application process. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. Student participation is from middle school through high school.
Upward Bound
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low- to moderate-income families and from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in, and graduate from, postsecondary institutions. Student participation is in high school. Upward Bound provides a 6-week summer school and monthly stipends.
Who is Eligible?
TRIO serves students who are:
- First-generation college students (neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree)
- Students who meet federal income guidelines
- Students with documented disabilities
