GODFREY — Lewis and Clark Community College student Abigail Johnes is building a future in architecture while balancing a full academic load, leadership roles and extensive community involvement in Calhoun County.
A 2025 graduate and valedictorian of Brussels Community High School, Johnes is pursuing an associate degree in architecture at LC, with plans to graduate in 2027. She is an active member of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), where she serves as secretary, and said her interest in architecture grew from a passion for both art and math.
“Architecture allows me to express my creative side while continuing to learn something new every day,” Johnes said.
Johnes chose LC after receiving the college’s Valedictorian Scholarship, which covers her tuition, in addition to the Larry Underwood Scholarship. Remaining close to home enables her to work approximately 30 hours per week at The Bank of Kampsville, serve as Miss Calhoun County and stay involved in community activities.
Her service includes volunteering at Veterans Day programs, assisting with Brussels community celebrations and reading to pre-K and grade school students at local schools. She also operates a small baking business.
“Abby Johnes is the definition of dedication, academics, and hard work,” said Architectural Technology/Drafting and Design Program Coordinator Joel Hall.
“She is one in a line of many talented young women from Brussels who have come through our program and found success. As the current Miss Calhoun County, she represents our Architectural Technology program very well and is also the current secretary of AIAS.”
Johnes’ achievements reflect her commitment to excellence. In addition to being named high school valedictorian and an Illinois State Scholar in 2025, she earned the Silver Medallion Award and served as president of the National Honor Society, Pep Club, Civics Club and her senior class. She was also named to the IHSA All-State Academic Honorable Mention Team, was part of the 2024 IHSA Class 1A state championship volleyball team and won the IDEA Drafting Competition in 2024.
After LC, Johnes plans to transfer to Southern Illinois University Carbondale to pursue a Master of Architecture and hopes to study abroad. She ultimately aims to become a licensed architect working for an accredited firm.
Johnes said she would recommend the architecture program to other students.
“It’s very interesting, and I wouldn’t want to be studying anything else,” she said.
Despite her busy schedule, Johnes enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, wakeboarding, live music and art. She has visited eight countries.
“My life may be busy, but I am so grateful for everything I am able to do,” Johnes said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
